Chapter 21: Morning After
"Say that again," I said, "without moving your mouth."
I sat up in bed with the quilt around me.
Casimir lay on his side with one eyebrow raised, the one with the scar.
I can hear you, he thought.
It was not a voice exactly.
It was a thought that arrived in the shape of his voice, low and dry, with his whole attention behind it.
"Stop that," I said aloud.
I'm not doing anything.
"You're being loud."
That's not my fault.
I threw a pillow at him.
He caught it, grinning, and I felt the grin from the inside, warm in my own face.
"This is going to be a problem," I said.
"It's going to be a delight," he said, out loud this time.
"Breakfast."
He got up and pulled on his jeans.
I followed him down the hall with the quilt dragging behind me, and the cold floor made me yelp.
He cooked.
I sat on the counter, where I had sat the first night, with a mug of black coffee.
