Chapter 9: Silver
Perry called Brianne with one hand and held pressure on Garret's shoulder with the other.
"I need your kit. The studio. Now."
"Perry, it's ten at night."
"A werewolf bit a werewolf, and the teeth were silver."
There was a pause.
"I'm putting my shoes on."
He carried Garret in.
Two hundred pounds of unconscious Alpha, up the back stairs, through the kitchen and down the inside stairs to the studio office.
Perry's arms didn't even burn.
He laid Garret on the office desk on top of the attendance sheets and threw Mom's old dance blanket over him from the waist down.
Brianne came through the front door eight minutes later in her puffer coat and pajama pants, with her clinic bag over her shoulder.
She looked at the bite. She looked at Garret, naked under a blanket with sequins on it.
"Okay," she said. "Hold the lamp."
She snapped on gloves and pulled out a pair of forceps.
Garret woke up when she went in for the first piece.
He came up off the desk with his eyes gold and a sound in his chest that rattled the trophy shelf.
Brianne put one hand flat on his sternum and pushed him back down.
"Lie still, Cujo."
"That hurts."
"I've pulled porcupine quills out of a rottweiler who complained less."
"I'm not a rottweiler."
"No. The rottweiler had manners."
Perry held the desk lamp and tried not to laugh, and failed.
Garret looked up at him from the desk.
"Your sister is enjoying this."
"Yes," Brianne and Perry said at the same time.
She got out the first piece. A tiny curved cap of silver, the size of a grain of rice.
Then a second. Then a third.
She dropped them into a coffee mug one by one, and each one pinged.
"Somebody had this done on purpose," she said. "You don't get silver caps on your teeth by accident. That's dental work. That's money."
When the last one came out, the black edges of the bite started to fade.
Perry watched it happen.
The torn skin pulled together. The blood stopped. The gray went out of Garret's face and the color came back.
In two minutes, there was just a pink mark on his shoulder, and Brianne taped gauze over it anyway out of principle.
She stripped off her gloves.
"No running. No fighting. No more alleys." She pointed at Perry. "And you. Upstairs. Sleep."
"Yes, ma'am."
She picked up her bag and looked at the two of them.
At Garret, sitting up on the desk under a sequined blanket.
At Perry, still holding the lamp.
"I'm going home," she said. "Text me if he dies."
The bell over the front door rang behind her.
Perry found Garret a pair of his gray sweatpants. They came up to the middle of Garret's shins.
Garret followed him upstairs.
In the kitchen Garret stopped and leaned on the counter, where he'd left the check in September.
"You yelled," he said.
"You said you'd hear it."
"I heard it from Lincoln Square."
"That's two miles."
"I know." Garret looked at him. "I've never run that fast."
Perry thought about the alley.
Garret shaking. Garret holding on to him.
Perry didn't trust him yet. Not all the way.
But his whole body had decided something in that alley, and his head was trying to catch up.
"Perry," Garret said. "I don't want to sleep on your couch tonight."
Perry's heart thumped.
"I want to sleep in your bed. With you. If you want that. If you don't, I'll take the couch, and I'll still be here in the morning."
He didn't move toward Perry.
He just waited, with his hands flat on the counter.
"Ask me properly," Perry said.
"Can I take you to bed?"
"Yes," Perry said. "I want you to. Yes."
Garret came quietly for a man his size.
Perry pulled him into the bedroom by the waistband of the gray sweatpants and pushed him down onto the quilt.
Garret went without fighting, and that alone made Perry's breath catch.
The full moon came through the window and put a white stripe across Garret's chest.
He looked up at Perry from the bed with his gray eyes gone gold.
"You first," Perry said.
"For what."
"For ruining a perfectly good blanket with your blood earlier."
Garret's mouth twitched.
"That was your sister's doing."
"Lie still."
Garret put his hands behind his head, which made the gauze on his shoulder pull slightly.
Perry climbed onto the bed and straddled his thighs.
The quilt was soft under Perry's knees.
Mom had sewn it out of old dresses and curtains, and Garret's back was on it now.
Perry pulled his sweater off over his head and threw it at the chair.
