Chapter 16: Threat
"Have I?" I said.
Edward Lowther smiled the way he had in my kitchen.
"Officer," he said to the trooper, "I'm the chairman of this hospital's board. I assume you have what you need."
"We do, sir," the investigator said. "Every page is sealed and logged."
"Then don't let me keep you."
She didn't move. Neither did the trooper.
So Edward talked to me in front of all of them.
"You've been reinstated at Mercy General," he said. "That's nice. Mercy's pediatric wing is being built at cost. Costs change."
I didn't answer.
He turned his head an inch toward Andrew.
"Dr. Galbraith. You're practicing without hospital privileges, at a birth center with one physician. Licensed by a board I've sat on." He let that land. "A complaint takes very little to file."
Andrew put his glasses back on.
"File it," he said.
Edward looked back at me.
"And your friend. The midwife. Her son's father lives in Delaware, I believe. He's behind on support. I imagine a good lawyer would make him feel very differently about custody."
