Chapter 23: Two Whole Wolves

The oldest elder gave me my father's land at the foot of the lane, in the dusk, with a rolled paper and a stub of red wax.

"Aldren share," he said. "Cabin, barn and the north meadow to the river. It was held in Bernard's name for fifteen years, and the pack has put it back."

I took the paper in both hands.

It was lighter than I had imagined.

"Thank you."

"Thank your father," he said. "He wrote it down before he went in."

He tipped his hat to Corbin and went down the lane.

The hound sat on the burned step with the thermos on his collar.

He watched us and did not look impressed.

"He's decided he lives here," Corbin said.

"He can stay."

"I thought he was Wynne's."

"Wynne said he wasn't."

Corbin looked at the dog for a long moment.

"I'm going to have to learn to throw a stick," he said.

I laughed so hard I had to hold the door.

He turned, and his face was lit and young, and I stopped laughing.

"Come inside," I said.

The kitchen was warm.

I had left the stove banked.

The quilt on my father's bed was still singed at the edge where my hands had been.

I locked the door.

Then I turned around and pulled Corbin's sweater over his head.

He let me.

He stood there bare to the waist in the lamplight with his hands at his sides.

I put my mouth on the pink band at his throat, very softly.

"Does it hurt?"

"It aches," he said. "I like it."

I kissed it again.

I pushed him back onto the bed, and he went down laughing, and I climbed on top of him.

"This one's mine," I said. "I'm taking it."

"Take it."

"I'm going to take a long time."

"I'm not going anywhere."

I unbuckled his belt with my teeth, and he said a word that made me grin against his stomach.
