Chapter 20: What It Costs

Ronan laid the knife on his desk and unbuttoned his left cuff.

It was a plain folding knife with a bone handle, and it had been his father's.

"There's a way to give the blood back that the Moot doesn't need to see," he said. "You open your wrist over mine. I drink. It goes home."

I sat down in the chair across from him.

"And that's all?"

"For me, yes." He rolled the sleeve back to the elbow. "For you, no."

"Say it."

"The blood closed your lung that night, Mara. It's what's been holding it closed."

I put my hand on my left side without meaning to.

"You told me it healed."

"It healed. I don't know if it stays healed without the blood behind it." He didn't look away. "The oldest aunt thinks it would hold. She also thinks it might not."

"What does the Moot's old record say?"

"The woman in the old case bled inside within a week."

The study was very quiet.

Pines scraped the window.

"So that's the price," I said. "I get to be human again, and I might die in a hallway."

"Or you might not."

"And you get the rank back."

"I get the rank back." His mouth twisted. "A real one. I'd go into the Moot and nobody could say a word. I'd have everything I lost."

"And the debt?"

"Paid. I'd say it myself, in front of them. You'd be free to walk out of this house and never see it again."

"You've known this for a week."

"I have."

"You told me today."

"I told you after the ring." His voice went rough. "I wanted you to have the seat before I put the knife on the table. I wanted you to know it was yours, whatever you chose."
