Chapter 13: The Bond Cut
Boots hammered across the bridge from the Ashfall side.
Bram stepped in front of me before I had finished turning.
It was Joss, alone, with his jacket torn open and his sandy hair plastered to his forehead.
"Don't," he panted. "I came by myself. I swear it on my mother."
"Then talk," Bram said.
Joss looked past him at me, at the blanket around my shoulders and the borrowed boots on my feet.
"It's true, then," he said. "I saw you from the tree line. The white wolf."
"What happened to Garrick?" I said.
"He fell at the Ashfall end after the howl. He's alive. He can't stand." Joss rubbed his face with both hands. "Cora, I have to tell you something, and you're going to hate me for the three years I kept my mouth shut."
"Tell it."
"The night we buried his brother, Garrick got drunk in the pack house kitchen."
He swallowed.
"He said, 'Her father's blood is the only thing that will hold this pack up.' I thought he meant your land. I thought he meant the Wexley name."
"He meant me," I said.
"He meant what you were doing for him. He knew from that night. He married you within the season."
The cold went all the way through me and came out the other side as something steadier.
I had spent days wondering whether he'd known.
Now I knew, and I felt almost calm.
"Did Imogen know?" I said.
"I don't know. I think so. She was in the kitchen that night, too."
Hester stuck her head out of the truck. "Somebody had better say what happens next, because I'm too old to stand on a bridge at midnight."
