Chapter 10: The Pen

"You know?" I said.

"Dear, I have known since you were twenty-five and moved in," Helen said. "You looked at my son across the soup like he was the last lifeboat."

"Which son?" said Tobin.

"The one who isn't you."

Tobin's face did something complicated.

Then he slapped both palms on the table, and the roses jumped.

"Fine," he said. "Fine! You all want the truth? There was no wedding!"

"Tobin," said Anders.

"It was a party. It was a show. I wasn't even there. I sent him." He jabbed a finger across the table. "He stood in for me. Ask anyone. It doesn't count."

Bree put a hand over her eyes.

"I have it in writing," Tobin said. "Leonie, show them."

I stared at him.

He wanted it produced in public, by me, at the dinner table.

So I reached into my bra, in front of my mother and Anders's mother, and took out the folded hotel note.

I handed it to Helen.

She unfolded it and read it aloud, slowly.

"'I, Tobin Carrow, was not the groom at the wedding on Saturday. My brother Anders took my place.'"

"There," said Tobin. "See? It's void."

"It's a very clear statement," said Helen. "Thank you, darling."

"So you understand. It never happened. Leonie can go to her mother's, and Bree and I..."
