Chapter 12: Anders's POV

Anders's POV

I kissed my wife's sleeping shoulder, put on my trousers and went down the hall to find my brother.

It was one in the morning.

I had never in my life walked into Tobin's room without knocking.

I knocked.

"It's open," he called. "I'm busy."

He was in the en suite bathroom, kneeling at the sink with his sleeves rolled to the elbow.

Bree's silk blouse floated in the basin.

"You should not be washing that at one in the morning," I said.

"It's silk. It has to be done while it's wet." He lifted a sleeve, looked at it, and set it down. "Don't judge me. She has a Tuesday deadline."

"I am not judging."

"You are standing there judging me."

I stayed in the doorway.

My brother has a motorcycle scar on his left forearm and a gold stud he had put in at nineteen to annoy our father.

All our lives, people have told us we have the same face. I have never believed it.

His face was always moving, and mine always waited.

"The application," I said.

He wiped his hands on a towel and took his phone from the shelf.

"I told Bree it was a waste of a good wedding," he said. "I had to fill out the license form myself, three weeks ago, because our lawyer was busy, and I put my own name on it. Groom: Tobin Carrow."

He held out the screen.

It was a photograph of a county form. On the groom's line, in Tobin's loose scrawl, it said: Tobin Carrow.
