Chapter 19: Last Session
Julian was packing his office when we found him on Monday morning.
Three cardboard boxes sat on the desk.
The shelves were half empty.
The big potted plant had gone, and the beige walls looked paler where the abstract prints had hung.
He turned as we came in, and I saw he had not slept.
"I sent everything to the state licensing board at midnight," he said. "The recordings, the payments, my own statement. I surrendered my license."
"You didn't have to," Wade said.
"I did."
"She'd have called them anyway."
"Yes," Julian said. "But this way I'm the one who said it first."
He picked up a framed diploma and laid it carefully in a box.
I watched his hands.
They were steady, but he held the frame a second too long.
"What happens now?" I asked.
"The board will review. It will take months. They will almost certainly revoke it." He smiled, thin and tired. "I've been a very good therapist for twenty years, and I did a bad thing for money. I'd like to say it was worth it."
