Friday evening the building was empty.
The receptionist had gone home.
The hallway lights were off, and only one door at the end of the second floor showed a line of gold.
Wade held my hand in the elevator.
He had never done that in public.
He did it now in an empty box lit by one fluorescent tube.
I laced my fingers through his and felt his pulse in his palm.
"You can still leave," he said.
"Can you?"
"No."
We had left our phones in the truck.
We had left our wallets and our keys, and under my coat I wore nothing but skin.
Dr. Thorsby opened the door himself.
He wore a grey shirt, dark slacks, and no glasses.
The room behind him was lit by one lamp on the bookshelf.
He looked at Wade.
Wade looked at him.
Neither of them said a word.
I had never felt so much tension in a room, and I had never been so wet.
"Coats," Julian said, finally.
I let mine slide off my shoulders.
I heard the sharp breath Wade took.
I saw Julian's gaze travel down me and come back to my face, calm and dark.
