Miles had reserved a table beside a climbing plant with strong territorial ambitions.
Its longest branch rested on his chair.
He moved the chair and found a second branch waiting underneath.
"You have a rival," I told him.
He tucked both branches behind the railing before I sat down.
The server brought menus and a little candle.
The candle went out when she set it down.
She lit it again and stepped backward.
It went out again.
Miles looked up at the fan above us.
"Could we have the table without atmosphere?" he asked.
The server laughed and took the candle away.
I put my hand on his wrist.
"This is already better than most dates I've had," I said.
His thumb turned lightly against my palm.
"I'd like it to be a good one," he answered.
I wanted that enough to stop pretending the old thing didn't matter.
