Chapter 30: Consent at First Light
At first light Aquas put his palm flat against Lucien's chest at the sun-disc gate, and the wall that had been stone all night opened along a seam of gold.
The grey-bearded rider held out his palm of ash again.
Aquas took the hand and turned it to the light.
Six horses. Shod in moon-court steel. South of the watch line and pointed at the gate.
He said the number out loud.
'Six,' he said. 'South of us. Moving toward the temple.'
Durn's jaw worked once.
'The two crew I sent after the tracks,' she said. 'They are on the far bank. With the King's riders. Their posts are empty behind you.'
So the paired watch had already broken.
The two people he was short were across the sand with the King.
They were waiting to be called back or counted against him.
He did not raise his voice.
'Forge crew holds the shelf pass,' he said. 'Nobody moves off it. I take Lucien, Durn, and the greybeard down to the gate.'
