"Then the board says it," Vanessa said.
Damon turned.
My sister stood in the middle of the rotunda in her plain black dress, with fifty of our staff behind her.
"Tomorrow, nine o'clock," she said. "The Harbor Ballroom. Doors open. Everybody who works there is invited."
"Board meetings aren't a show, babe."
"Don't call me that," she said. "I hold the controlling vote. I decide where we meet."
The Harbor Ballroom smelled like lilies again in the morning.
Not funeral lilies.
The housekeepers had put fresh ones on every table to celebrate the inspector's clean report, and nobody had told them to.
The round tables were gone.
Rows of gold chairs filled the floor, and every one had somebody in it.
Housekeepers. Cooks. The front desk. Maintenance in their coveralls. The night shift, who should have been asleep.
The ones who couldn't sit stood along the walls under the chandeliers.
Where the head table had stood on the day of the memorial, there was a plain folding table with four chairs.
My mother sat in the middle as chair.
She wore a gray dress and no pearls, and her wrist was covered by a long sleeve.
Vanessa sat on her right. I sat on her left.
The fourth chair was Damon's.
He came in at nine sharp with his lawyer, and walked down the center aisle between the gold chairs.
