Chapter 27: What She Asked

"Leave me out of your statement," my mother said.

The ballroom was empty except for the two of us and the fresh lilies.

A housekeeper was folding gold chairs at the far end, very slowly, so she could hear.

"Tomorrow you'll sit across from that man in the brown suit," my mother said. "Tell him Damon did it. All of it."

"Damon's finished either way. One more charge won't change anything for him."

"It changes it for you."

"Yes," she said. "That's why I'm asking."

I put my notes down on the folding table.

"I can't."

"You can do anything you decide to do. You always could. You're my daughter."

"You're asking me to sign a lie with my name on it," I said. "Again."

She flinched.

It was small, a tightening around her eyes, but I saw it.

"Elise, I'm fifty-nine."

"I know how old you are."

"I'll lose the house. My friends. Everything your father and I built in this town."

"You'll lose them because of what you did," I said. "Not because of what I say."

She stood up from the table.

For a moment she looked like she might put her hand on my face, the way she did when I had fevers as a child.
