Chapter 28: No Leverage

"Mobile," I said.

"Mobile." He shifted the box again, as if it had gotten heavier.

"A hotel on the bay. Three hundred people. An owner who reminds me of somebody."

"Congratulations."

"Elise."

"I mean it," I said. "They're lucky."

The clerk at the front desk was pretending very hard not to listen.

Noah looked at me a moment longer.

Then he nodded once, and walked out through the revolving door with his terrible mug sticking out of the box.

I stood in the lobby and let him go.

Through the glass I watched him drop the box into his truck bed and stand there with both hands on the tailgate.

He didn't look back at the door.

I'd said congratulations.

Dorinda came across the marble and stood beside me.

"Well," she said. "That was stupid."

"He has a job."

"He has a truck with a broken tailgate and a face like a kicked dog." She took her glasses off their chain.

"You've got no bank, no auction and no Damon, Lise. What's left to trade?"

I looked at her.

"Nothing," I said slowly.

"Then go," Dorinda said. "Before he packs the coffee pot. I can't watch you drink hotel coffee for the rest of my life."

His rented house stood on stilts at the end of a sand road on the West End.
