Chapter 30: Visiting Room
I went back inside and finished my creole.
I didn't tell anyone at the table until the dishes were done.
Then I told all three of them, because I'd promised Noah no more surprises, and that ran both ways.
"Don't go," Vanessa said.
"Go," said Dorinda. "And don't let him talk first."
Noah didn't say anything.
He drove me to the county jail on Tuesday and stayed in the truck with a paper cup of his own terrible coffee.
The visiting room was a row of steel stools in front of a long window of scratched plexiglass.
A black phone hung on the wall at every station.
Damon was already on the other side when the guard brought me in.
Orange jumpsuit. No tan anymore, after five days inside. No sailing watch.
His silver-blond hair had gone flat, and without the linen he looked smaller, and older, and exactly as pleased with himself.
He picked up his phone and waited for me to pick up mine.
"You look well," he said. "Running a hotel agrees with you."
