"Yes," I said.
I said it with my mouth full of tiger's blood, and it came out pink and badly, and he kissed me anyway.
Then he picked his snow cone back up off the step.
"Seven," he said. "Wear the dress."
"It's the only one I own."
"I know. I like it."
The Harbor Ballroom smelled like lilies and the Gulf at four o'clock the next afternoon.
The day the auction was supposed to be.
The windows were open all along the seaward side, and the breeze lifted the tablecloths.
I'd asked the banquet staff to set it up the way it had been on the day of the memorial.
Round tables, white linen, the chandeliers on full.
Then I'd asked them to take away the head table.
Nobody sat higher than anybody else.
My father's photograph stood on its easel by the windows, sixty-seven years old and laughing at something off to the side.
This time I'd chosen the picture.
He was standing behind the front desk in it, in his shirtsleeves, the year I turned fourteen, with a pencil behind his ear.
The room filled up.
