Chapter 4: The Girlfriend

The bell over the door rang hard enough to shake the glass.

Brynn came down the aisle with her face already crumpling, and Daphne stayed one step behind her.

Lindy came last, holding her phone up at chest height.

"Miles." Brynn's voice cracked on the second syllable. "I woke up and you were gone. I've been calling you for an hour."

"My phone was off."

"I know why it was off." She grabbed the end of the booth with both hands. "Is it because of her?"

The whole diner turned around.

A man at the counter lowered his coffee. The waitress stopped with a plate in each hand.

"Brynn, sit down or leave," I said. "You're making a scene."

"I'm making a scene?" Tears spilled down her cheeks, and they were real, or they looked real. "You turned off my pass at the coaster line. You cancelled our dinner. You told me to move out on your birthday, and now you're sitting here with some woman and a sweatshirt."

Daphne said, loud enough for the back booths, "He's been cheating on her. I knew it."

"I haven't."

"Then who is she?" Lindy said, and tilted the phone toward Hallie.

I opened my mouth.

I had nothing. It was a diner and eggs and a woman I had met in a boat line the day before.

Hallie put her fork down.

She slid out of her side of the booth, walked around the table and sat down next to me, close enough that her knee pressed mine.

"I'm his girlfriend," she said.

Her voice was easy and pleasant, the voice of a woman giving a name at a reservation desk.

"Since Saturday," she added.
