Chapter 21: First Blood

I threw both my arms back over my head.

My grey hands landed flat on the seventh step, on the stone he was standing on.

It was one block, cut and laid by somebody's hands two hundred years ago, and I could feel every edge of it.

I pushed.

There was no stride to cross this time and no mud to walk through.

The block went to grit under his standing foot all at once.

His boot came down where my face had been and found nothing under the other one.

He dropped.

He pitched forward down the stair over me, and he did what anyone does when they fall.

He flung his left hand out to catch himself.

For the first time in thirty years it came off his chest.

My right hand closed on his bare left wrist.

I had never in my life pushed the other way on a person.

I pushed for one line of skin, no longer than my little finger, and then I stopped.

His wrist opened under my hand.

He landed hard on his side on the steps below me, and I let go.

Blood ran down his wrist and dripped onto the stone of the Mouth.
