Chapter 23: Healers in Front

I looked at my little brother for a long time.

He was nineteen, with a new lance in place of the one he broke on ten.

He had held a sixth-floor warden on a stair by himself.

"Which healer?" I asked.

"Her," Daan said, and pointed down the hall.

The youngest healer was standing with the cordless healers, who weren't cordless any more.

She saw us both looking at her and went red to the hair.

"She asked me," Daan said. "On ten, while she was mending my ribs. She asked if she could walk in front next time."

"Yes," I said.

He blinked.

"Just yes?"

"You'll need four," I said. "Go and find two more before I think about it."

They went down three days later.

It was floor three, an Iron floor, and the whole guild knew about it by breakfast.

Half the hall came out to the Mouth to watch them go, and I stood at the top with my hands in my coat pockets.

The smiths had worked nights to finish the new gate early, and they had hung it the day before.

It was raised on its chains over the stair, and its bars were still bright from the forge.
