Chapter 22: The Seamstress

The seamstress's shop was on the fourth floor of a building with no sign.

Two of Jasper's security men stood in the stairwell, and a third waited in the lobby, because of the photograph.

I told them it was too much.

Jasper told them it was not enough.

Inside, bolts of silk leaned against the walls.

The seamstress was a small gray woman with pins in her mouth.

She did not say anything when I came in.

She looked at me from head to foot, once.

"Good," she said around the pins. "Take off the coat."

I stood on a low round platform in front of a three-sided mirror.

She draped the muslin over my shoulders and began to pin.

She did not say hips.

She did not say a diet.

She said, "Here you want a seam that holds. Here you want it to fall." She laid her palm flat against my waist. "You carry yourself like a woman who is going to walk. I'll cut it so you can."

I looked at the mirror.

I saw a woman in a half-made dress with her chin up, and she looked like a queen who had not been told yet.

"It's beautiful," I said.

"It isn't finished."

"I meant you."

She took a pin out of her mouth and almost smiled.

We worked for an hour.

I held still.

She pinned and hummed.

Outside, the elevator dinged.

I thought nothing of it.

Then I heard a man's voice in the stairwell, loud and smooth, asking the security man for his name.

"Family," the voice said. "I'm family. Tell her it's Spencer."

My stomach turned over.

The seamstress's needle stopped.

"The man downstairs said nobody was coming up," she said calmly.

The door swung open.

Spencer Langdon stood on the threshold.
