Chapter 13: Terms
I did not go back inside Kazuko's house.
I drove home with my shoe on the passenger seat and both hands locked on the wheel.
For six years I had been the one person in the room who was never lied to.
I stood in my dark kitchen and did not turn on a light.
At ten past midnight two sets of headlights swung onto my street.
The truck and the hatchback parked nose to tail at my curb, and nobody got out for a long time.
I opened the door before they knocked.
"My mother is asleep in the guest room," Hana said. "We left a note. It says we went for air."
"Nine years of marriage," I said.
"Yes."
"And eleven months of divorce."
"Yes," Dane said.
"Come in."
I did not give them the couch.
I stood in the middle of my living room and pointed at the hardwood floor.
"Kneel."
Dane went down first, slowly, one big knee and then the other.
Hana went down a breath behind him.
They knelt side by side, a foot apart, and they did not touch.
"Why?" I said. "In order. One at a time. Dane."
He kept his eyes on my rug.
"Because she said 'I'm tired,'" he said. "That was all. She moved her pillow to the sunroom and she said 'I'm tired.'"
"I know."
"She never told me anything else. I waited a year for her to come back to our bed."
His voice was level, and his hands were not.
"Then the papers came, and I signed them the day they came. I figured it was what she wanted. I figured a man should let her go."
