Chapter 17: Edith Takes a Turn
Edith arrived at Audrey's room with a bag full of curtain ties.
"In case," she explained at the door.
Audrey looked at the plain roller blind behind her desk.
"There's nothing to tie," she told her.
Edith followed her gaze and put the bag down.
She hadn't brought a whole curtain, which seemed like progress.
I'd come because Audrey had asked me to be there.
She hadn't asked me to defend her room.
The signed kettle drawing stood against the books on her desk.
Edith noticed it immediately.
"A horse?" she asked.
"A kettle," Audrey answered.
"With a riding hat," I added.
Edith studied the drawing without requesting an improved version.
"It does look happier with the hat," she decided.
Audrey pulled the desk chair out for her.
Edith sat and discovered the seat could turn.
She moved her feet and rotated halfway toward the wall.
