I slept three hours.

At seven the next evening I walked a red carpet in Hollywood in a green dress my roommate had picked out.

She had threatened to fire anyone who let me wear black.

Flashbulbs went off on both sides, and a hundred photographers shouted my name.

Not Haverill.

"Addie! Addie Lenox!"

I stopped where they wanted me to, and Beck stopped beside me, in a dark suit with his stitched hand in my hand.

"You're doing great," he said, out of the side of his mouth.

"I'm going to be sick again."

"You can do that after. Smile."

I smiled.

Behind me stood the old assistant in his tuxedo and his borrowed fur hat, which he had refused to take off.

My roommate had cried twice in the car and fixed her mascara in a hubcap.

My phone buzzed with a text from my mother.

I signed myself out.

The nurses are driving me.

I'm a rebel.

Save me a seat.

I stared at it.

"She's coming?"

"Apparently," I said, and my chest hurt.

The press line ran thirty feet, and at the end of it stood a small figure in white.
