Chapter 16: The Corbin Lecture

By eight forty-five on Friday morning there wasn't a seat left in Corbin Hall.

Students sat in the aisles.

Professors from three departments filled the back rows, and two of them had traveled from out of state.

The dean stood at the lectern in a gray suit, glowing.

I sat in the front row with Dane on my left and Cleo on my right.

Cleo had brought a bag of cinnamon rolls from Pruett's and had eaten two already.

"You can hit him," she whispered. "I'd like to be on record that I told you."

"I'm not going to hit him."

"I'll do it." Cleo said.

"I know."

Dane didn't speak.

He had put on a navy jacket that was too big for him.

He sat with his hand resting on the armrest between us, palm up, an inch from mine.

It was an invitation, and he did not make it again.

I put my hand in it.

His fingers closed.

Down the row, three seats away, Roland sat in his good flannel shirt with a red tie he must have bought for the occasion.

Noreen was beside him with her ledger on her lap, wearing a new cream sweater.

She looked at my throat when she sat down.

She saw the locket.

Her smile did not move.

On the stage behind the dean, the eleven blackboards were washed clean and waiting.
