Chapter 9: What She Saw

Ronan struck him three times before the old man stood up.

I counted them from the landing, and each one landed on a back that did not flinch.

On the fourth swing the thin elder pushed his chair back, and the legs shrieked on the boards.

"That is enough," he said.

Ronan paused with the strap in the air.

"The council came to see the girl," the elder said. "We did not come to watch a man whipped for feeding a guest."

"She is not a guest," Silas said.

"Then she is something that has made eleven wolves put their forks down." The old man looked at me, and I knew he had known I was there. "Put it away, Silas. We will talk in the morning."

Silas stood quiet for a moment.

Then he took the strap out of Ronan's hand, and the room breathed out.

I ran back up the stairs before anyone could see my face.

I sat on the bed for two hours with my knees pulled up and my arms wrapped around them.

The white hair had gone from my wrists.

It left no sign that it had ever been there, and I kept looking at my bare skin.

At midnight I got up.

The door was not locked.

Nico had left it on the latch, and he was nowhere in the hall.

I walked down the corridor in my bare feet and pushed open the study door.

Darius sat at the desk in the green lamplight with his shirt off.

A sheet of gauze was taped across his back, spotted red in four places, and he was reaching over his shoulder with a pad of cotton and failing to reach.

He looked up, and his hand dropped.

"You should be in your room."

"Hold still."

I took the cotton out of his fingers.

He sat very straight, and I dabbed at the edge of the tape where it had pulled, and neither of us spoke.

His skin was hot.

Under my hand I felt every breath he took, and every one was careful.
