Chapter 22: The Cup
We married in the palace chapel at noon, and the Queen sat in the front pew in silver.
I wore the cream satin.
I walked the length of the aisle on my own feet.
The King leaned on Alonso's arm in the first row, awake and furious and bright-eyed, and four hundred guests turned their heads.
Bastian stood at the altar.
When he saw me, he put a hand to his mouth.
I had never seen him do it before.
We said the words, plain and old, in front of the Prior.
He put a ring on my finger, a plain gold band, and I put one on his.
"Husband," I said.
"Wife," said Bastian.
That was all.
The feast was in the Hall of Oranges, a table down the whole length of it, white and gold.
I ate the soup, the lamb, the pigeon pie and the saffron rice, and a wedge of the cake.
It was a different cake, baked by the master baker himself, with forty floury handprints pressed into the icing.
At the head of the table, the King sat in a gilded chair with a rug over his knees.
