Chapter 28: Struck
We were late.
The King of the Lycans ran up the palace lawn in last night's shirt with his shoes in his hand.
I ran beside him with my hair down and my dress buttoned wrong, laughing so hard I had to stop twice.
"Your Holiness," he panted. "Your buttons."
"Your shoes, stud horse."
We stopped outside the Council chamber door and fixed each other.
He did my buttons. I combed his hair with my fingers.
Then he took my hand, and we walked in.
The chamber was full.
The she-wolves had come down off the back bench. They stood along the walls in a row, the lake mothers and the pack runners and the court ladies, shoulder to shoulder.
The matron stood among them in her apron, with her arms folded.
The twins were on the princes' bench. The second prince sat beside them with his mate.
There was a gap at the end of the bench where Piers used to sit.
Nobody had filled it.
The stool behind the oldest Alpha's chair was empty.
The old man sat in his chair with both hands on his stick.
