Chapter 30: The Last Word
I opened it at the breakfast table, with Auden reading over my shoulder and not pretending otherwise.
It was one page.
Elspeth.
I won't ask for anything. I've got one question, and I can't put it on paper.
I'll never come south of the river. If you ever come north, I'll be on the night watch.

That was all.
No title. He didn't have one anymore.
Auden put his coffee down.
"You don't owe him a trip," he said.
"I know."
"You don't owe him a single word."
"I know."
He looked at my face for a while.
"You're going."
"Once," I said. "And you're coming."
"Obviously I'm coming. I'm driving. You get carsick."
"I don't get carsick."
"You do now. Page forty of the book."
We went north in the second week of the first snow.
Auden drove the old palace truck because it had chains. The twins packed us a cooler.
It took most of a day.
The road went up out of the pines into bare rock and wind, and the snow came at the windscreen sideways.
