Chapter 15: The Bracelet

For a moment neither of them moved.

Mabel's back was to the door.

Her hands were in front of her, below the edge of the vanity, where the mirror couldn't see them.

She closed her fingers around the bracelet.

Then she slid her fist inside her open coat, into the inside pocket.

On Wednesday night she had cut a slit in the bottom of that pocket's lining, small as a buttonhole.

Below it, the hem was stitched shut all the way around.

She opened her fingers.

The bracelet slipped through the slit and dropped, with a tiny weight, into the bottom of the coat.

Mabel turned around.

"I was looking for the bathroom," she said.

Darla didn't answer.

She walked into the dressing room and closed the door behind her with one finger.

Then she looked past Mabel at the open drawer.

At the velvet pouch lying on the vanity, empty, with its drawstring loose.

Her face changed.

At the luncheon, Fern had seen the sweetness slide off it.

Mabel watched what was underneath come up.

"Give it to me."

"Give you what?"

Darla crossed the room in two steps and grabbed Mabel by the arm.

Her nails went in above the elbow, through the sleeve.

"You little thief. Give it to me."

"I don't have anything."

Darla yanked her hand open.
