Chapter 10: Dinner Next Door
On Wednesday night, Tucker burned the lasagna.
He stood over the oven with a dish towel on one shoulder and a smoke alarm screaming over his head.
"It's fine," he said. "It's rustic."
"It's black."
"Rustic is just black with confidence."
I laughed so hard I had to hold the counter.
It was the first time I had laughed since the guest room, and it came out of me rough and loud.
He waved the towel at the alarm until it stopped.
Then he looked at me, and he started to laugh too.
We ate cereal at his table, because the lasagna was gone.
He had taken the night off, and he had set out two plates and a candle he had clearly found in a drawer.
"I'm not very good at this," he said, nodding at the candle.
"At what?"
"Dinner. Dates. Whatever this is."
"Is it a date?"
"I haven't decided what it is," he said. "I only know I wanted you out of that house tonight."
I turned the spoon in my bowl.
The kitchen was warm, and he sat across from me with his elbows on the table.
"I want to say something plain," he said. "I'm not asking you for anything. You have a husband you haven't divorced, and a mother, and a lot of people to destroy. I'm not trying to be one more thing you have to handle."
"You're not."
"I'm saying I like you. I like how you talk about your cat and your clients and the people who leave a mess. I like that you laughed at the lasagna."
