Chapter 15: The Temple of Oaths

At noon two priests walked Ryota up out of the dark and into the Temple of Oaths.

The great hall under the dome was white marble, so bright after the cell that he had to squint.

In the middle of the floor sat the great stone.

It was black and as wide as a cart, and it gave off a low hum he could feel in his teeth.

The whole court sat in tiers around it, nobles in furs and priests in white.

The king sat in a gilded chair on a dais at the far side.

Lord Morvaine stood at his shoulder with a tall gray staff.

The four heroes sat on a bench to the king's left, in their white and silver.

Corisande stood among the King's Guard along the wall, with the escort sash across her coat, and didn't look at him once.

The high priest was an old woman with a voice like a bell.

"The Temple hears a charge of heresy against the stone," she said. "The accuser will swear."

Morvaine stepped down from the dais and laid his inky hand on the great stone.

"I swear to speak the charge truly," he said, "and to read the evidence truly. Forfeit, my life."
