Chapter 16: Whitney's Price

Giancarlo moved in front of me without seeming to move at all.

Whitney flinched back into the streetlight.

"I'm not here to do anything," she said. "Look at me. What am I going to do?"

"Doc," Giancarlo said quietly. "Your call."

I stepped out from behind him and walked down to the bottom of the steps.

Up close, she smelled like cigarettes instead of gardenias.

Her lips were bitten raw.

"Talk," I said.

"Not to him. To you."

"He stays. You don't get to pick that anymore."

She looked at Giancarlo, then down at the sidewalk.

"My father froze my cards this morning," she said. "Both my sponsors dropped me before lunch. The apartment's in his name. He changed the locks before I got home last night. I slept at a friend's, and she wants me out."

"That's sad," I said. "Next."

Her eyes flashed, the old Whitney for one second.

Then it went out.

"Grayson called me this morning," she said. "After the radio. He said if I don't tell the police the text was forced out of me, he'll tell them I sent him to the piers. That I paid for the bat too." She laughed, thin. "He said nobody would believe me over him. He said they never have."

"Did you send him?"

"I told him where the man would be. That's all. I swear to God that's all. The man called me asking for money, and I didn't have any money, so I called Gray." Her chin shook. "I thought he'd pay him off. I didn't know he'd bring a bat."
