Chapter 15: After Hours
The alarm panel by the back door beeped, and I punched in the code with Cass's breath on my neck.
The beeping stopped.
The credit union was dark, and it smelled of carpet cleaner and toner.
Only the exit sign and the streetlight through the front glass gave any light.
"Quiet," I whispered. "The bank next door has a guard who walks the block."
"Then I'll be quiet."
"You will."
I led him by the hand past the teller line, past the vault door, past the rope stanchions with the loan brochures.
My heels clicked on the tile, and I stopped and slipped them off and carried them.
He did the same with his boots, one at a time, balancing on one foot.
We went down the short hall in our socks.
My office was the last door.
I opened it and pulled him in and shut it, and the partition glass showed us the dark lobby, empty and silver.
He turned me around by the shoulders and pressed me back against the door.
He kissed me before I could say a word.
It was a hard deep kiss, and his hands were in my hair, and the claw clip fell off and clattered on the floor.
"Shh," I breathed into his mouth.
"You first."
"I'm not the one who makes noise."
"You're a liar."
I pushed him back with a hand on his chest.
"Sit on the edge of the desk," I said.
"That's your desk."
"Yes. Sit."
He looked at the neat desk, with its monitor, its stapler and its framed card from Hilde that said Be Kind and Be Paid.
He didn't sit.
"I'd like to look at you first," he said.
"Cass."
"Please. You're wearing the scarf."
I was.
The teal scarf was knotted at my throat, over my green turtleneck.
He undid the knot with two fingers, slowly, and drew the silk off my neck, and let it slide through his hand.
Then he laid it on the desk.
