Chapter 45: Broadway

The noise hit me.

The pub was packed to the walls.

Men in green scarves and paper hats were standing three deep at the brass rail.

A fiddler was playing in the corner by the fire.

Somebody had painted shamrocks on half the faces in the room.

The bagpipes from the street came in behind me through the open door.

Then the door swung shut, and one by one, from the front to the back, the room saw who'd come in.

The fiddler stopped.

I walked down the length of the bar.

Nobody touched me.

Men pulled their stools in to let me pass.

They looked at my belly, and then at my face, and then at the back booth.

Seamus Conlon was already standing up.

He was in his good tweed, with a green carnation in his lapel and his cap off, and his white hair brushed back.

His face was shining.

"Lads," he said, and his soft voice carried to every corner. "Lads. My daughter's come home."

Somebody started clapping.

Then the whole bar was clapping, and stamping, and banging glasses on the rail.

He came out of the booth with his arms open.

I let him take my shoulders.

I let him kiss my cheek.

He smelled of whiskey and shaving soap and the cold.

"Good girl," he said into my ear. "Good girl."

Then he turned me round by the shoulders to face the room, with his big hands on me.
