Chapter 5: My Mother's Rosary
Ilya didn't answer him right away.
He turned around, and through the narrow window in my door his eyes found mine.
He knew I'd heard.
"She's alive," he said into the phone. His voice was very quiet. "Ask me that a second time, Bellucci, and you won't be."
He hung up.
He stood in the hall with the phone in his fist for a while before he came in.
"What did he mean?" I said. "Still alive. Like he was surprised."
"He meant he heard you were in a hospital."
"He didn't say hospital."
"He's a man checking on a debt." He picked up my chart off the foot of the bed and read it upside down, which he couldn't do. "Rest. That's all you have to do. I'll do the rest."
Galina pointed her spoon at him until he left.
Then she pointed it at the soup until I ate.
Ten days on my back went slower than three years.
Galina brought me crossword books in English and corrected my answers in Russian.
Ilya came home earlier than before.
He'd stand in my doorway in his coat with the rain still on it and ask how the heartbeat was.
On the morning of the twentieth day the doctor came to the penthouse with his bag and said I could walk.
I went straight to Ilya's office.
"I want my mother's things," I said. "They're in Medford."
He looked up from his desk.
"Make a list. My men will bring them."
"Your men don't know which drawer. And I'm not sending strangers through my mother's rosary."
"You're in my house under the law. You leave it with me or not at all."
"Then come."
He sat back.
He studied me for a long second, the way he'd studied the ring on the warehouse floor.
