Chapter 6: Forty Days
I turned around on the step.
Donatella stood in my front hall in a borrowed cardigan, with her arms crossed and a little smile.
"No," I said. "And you'll never get close enough to find out."
I went down the steps and got in the car.
Ilya got in beside me and shut the door.
"What did she say?"
I didn't answer.
I was back in the powder room at the gala.
The stalls with the gold doors.
My clutch had slipped off my lap when I opened it to check, one more time, that I hadn't dreamed the second line.
The stick skittered across the tile and under the wall into the next stall.
A hand with pink nails slid it back to me.
I'd said thank you to a pair of cream satin heels.
Donatella had worn cream satin heels that night.
"She knew," I said.
"Knew what?"
"About the baby. She saw the test at the gala, two hours before the warehouse." My voice was flat and far away. "She knew when she was on her knees next to me. She knew when she was crying."
Ilya went very still.
"She cried harder," I said. "Right when he started walking. I thought it was fear."
"It wasn't."
"No."
He looked out the window at the stone house on the hill.
He looked at it.
"Say the word," he said.
"No."
"Shona."
"I said no. I don't want her hurt in some alley where nobody sees." I put my hand over my mother's rosary in my pocket. "I want her to say it out loud. In front of him."
He turned his head and looked at me for a long time.
"All right," he said. "Then that's what we'll do."
