Chapter 7: Under His Word
Nobody at the long table was eating anymore.
The grey-bearded brigadier kept his eyes on me.
He picked up his fork and laid it down beside his plate, very neat.
Ilya stood up.
He didn't push his chair back. He just rose out of it, and every man at the table sat a little straighter.
He walked down the length of the table, slow, past the bread and the vodka and his brother's photo propped against a bottle.
He stopped behind the grey-bearded man.
He put one hand on the back of the man's chair.
Then he spoke in English.
I knew he did it for me.
"She's under my word," Ilya said. "I gave it in front of witnesses, on the old law. Thirty days, unharmed."
"Your word was for the Italian," the brigadier said. His English was thick and slow. "Not for his woman. The boy is in the ground."
"I know where the boy is. I carried him there."
The table went dead quiet.
"Anyone who touches her," Ilya said, "or frightens her, or looks at her the way you are looking at her now, does not answer to the law. He answers to me."
He leaned down close to the man's ear.
"And I don't have any thirty days in me."
The brigadier looked at his plate.
After a while, he picked up his fork and ate his wheat and honey.
Ilya walked back to the head of the table and raised his glass.
"Misha," he said.
"Misha," the table said, and drank, and nobody looked at me again.
That night I couldn't sleep.
I went to the kitchen in my socks for crackers and found him there in the dark.
He was sitting at the island with no coffee and no laptop, just his hands flat on the marble.
