Chapter 8: Thirty Days
I looked at the key on the dresser.
Then at him.
"Anywhere," I said.
"Anywhere. My driver takes you, or you take a cab, or you walk. Nobody follows you. Nobody asks."
"And if I go back to Medford?"
His face didn't change at all.
"Then my driver takes you to Medford."
"Just like that."
"Just like that."
He held out my coat.
I got out of bed in Galina's flannel nightgown and took it from him.
"I have a scan at ten," I said.
"I know. The car's downstairs."
"Are you coming?"
"No." He looked at the key. "You need to walk out of this building one time without me behind you. Or you'll never know if you came back for me or for the walls."
I picked up the key.
I put it in my coat pocket.
He nodded once, and he walked away down the hall to his office, and he shut the door.
Galina was in the kitchen pretending not to listen, with a dish towel she'd been drying the same plate with for five minutes.
"So," she said.
"So."
"You come back for supper or not?"
"I don't know yet."
She put the plate down and took my face in both her hands, dish towel and all.
"Smart girl," she said. "Make him sweat."
The scan room at the clinic was the same dark and the same cold gel.
The doctor moved the wand and squinted and moved it again.
"It's gone," she said.
"What is?"
"The bleed. Completely reabsorbed." She turned the screen. "And look at this kid. Ten weeks and doing laps."
The little shape had arms now.
It jerked and flipped.
