Chapter 15: Marren's Test
Thad had been awake since before light, and he had never been so afraid of a woman holding a basket.
She sat on the rock outside the cave and made no move to stand.
"I don't come in unasked," Marren said. "Not into a keeper's den. That's old law."
Thad looked at the sky.
The sun was just clearing the pines.
"It's daylight," he said. "Come in, and eat."
She stood and crossed the line of snow.
She looked at everything in turn: the fire, the pot, the cubs in their nest, the carved spoon on its peg.
Tuck sat bolt upright with his notched ear toward her.
"I'm the head taster," he told her.
"Are you," said Marren.
"You can't have breakfast until I say."
"Then say it."
Tuck looked at the pot, and then at Thad.
Thad nodded and ladled out a bowl of barley porridge.
He had swirled in honey and a handful of Marren's own dried plums, stewed soft.
Tuck tasted it.
"Good," he said, with the air of a judge.
