Chapter 15: The Summons

The Circle of Stone was full by noon.

Every pack on the Eastern side had sent its Alpha or its Beta, and they stood three rows deep around the ring.

I had last stood on those flagstones in a grey dress, holding my mother's ruby, watching it hang on another woman.

Now I wore black and my parents' whole jewel against my throat, and Mathis walked at my left.

The Iron Fang unit came behind us in their coats.

Hester Quill waited on the elders' bench with the stone-circle brooch pinned at her collar.

She did not stand.

"Sabine Ardrey," she said. "You are summoned on three charges."

Her voice carried to the back row.

"That you took the Silverfang pack by challenge without leave of this Council. That you broke the arm of a pack officer. And that you hid an Alpha's scent in violation of the Council's vow."

A few of the wolves in the ring murmured.

"The Council moves to strip the Ardrey name from you," she said. "And to put Silverfang under a Council trustee until it is fit to be led."

"The vow ended last month," I said. "I kept my scent down for three years because you sealed it."
