Chapter 23: The Boathouse
They went down to the lake at dusk.
The path was frozen hard, and the dock boards rang under their shoes.
Leander carried a canvas bag, and Chris carried the rawhide key.
He fitted it into the shed lock that Bradford had broken, and the new lock turned smoothly.
"They changed the lock," he said. "This key shouldn't fit."
"I asked the grounds crew to keep it matching."
Chris pushed the door open.
The shed was dim and smelled of cold water and old cedar.
They climbed the ladder, Leander first, and he set a lantern on the beam.
The loft looked smaller than Chris remembered.
The rowing mat was still there.
The sleeping bag had been taken, and the bucket had been taken, and the boot-shaped stain had not changed at all.
"It's strange," Chris said.
"What is?"
"I was scared every night I slept here."
