Chapter 19: The Board
The sheriff's convoy reached the Ridge at nine, and Vernon Sallow opened the gate himself.
He wore the pearl-grey suit and a smile that had no floor under it.
"Sheriff," he said. "I wasn't told of a visit."
"You've been told now." The sheriff held up a paper folded in thirds. "A judge in Burns signed this at eight. It names the administration building and the laundry."
Sallow's eyes slid to the cruiser's back seat, where Sawyer sat in an orange jumpsuit with a sheet hem still caught on one knee.
"Mr. Harlan," he said faintly.
"Warden," Sawyer said. "Is my uncle in the building?"
"The board arrived last night. They are meeting in the boardroom at eleven."
"I'll be there."
He did not go to the boardroom first.
He walked down the ward in the sheriff's wake with the yard boss falling in beside him, and went to the bed at the back.
Wicks lay under two blankets with his glasses on and a drain still in his side.
He took one look at Sawyer and sighed.
"Hargis?"
"On the pavement, in cuffs."
"Good." The old man's mouth shook. "I've waited thirty-one years to hear someone say that."
Lorena stood at the foot of the bed with a chart.
