Chapter 21: The Hearing Repeats
The Honor Committee met in a paneled room with three judges at a long table and a single glass of water.
I sat in the witness chair.
Benedict sat in the gallery, one row back, with his elbows on his knees.
Camryn sat at the side table beside her mother and her mother's lawyer.
She had not slept.
I could see it in the way she kept pressing her thumb into her palm.
"Ms. Trowbridge," said the chair of the committee, a woman with iron hair and a quiet voice. "We have a serious allegation before us."
"Yes."
"Counsel, you may proceed."
The Foundation's lawyer stood with his folder.
"The Foundation's position is simple," he said. "Ms. Trowbridge wrote Ms. Ellingwood's paper for payment. Ms. Ellingwood submitted it in good faith."
"In good faith," said the chair, flatly.
"Ms. Trowbridge then profited by holding the fellowship that grew out of that arrangement."
He turned to Camryn.
"Ms. Ellingwood, would you confirm?"
The room went still.
