Chapter 5: What I Signed
"Say that again," I said.
"There are four heartbeats in this room," Bastian said, quieter. "Yours. And three that are not."
I had planned this a hundred ways on the bus.
I would hand him the picture at the tower door, with my chin up.
I would say it in a hotel suite, in front of lawyers.
I had never planned to say it with a broken lamp on the floor and glass in my hair.
"They're yours," I said.
Bastian sat down.
He did not choose to, I think.
His knees gave out and he sat on the edge of the motel bed, and the mattress creaked under him.
"That's not possible," he said.
"That's what I said."
"We are not able."
"I know the rule, Bastian. I've had it recited to me at dinner every night for a year."
His head came up.
"Every night?"
I took the folded printout out of my bra and put it in his hand.
He unfolded it slowly.
The little flickers sat in a row on the gray paper, three of them, with a date and a doctor's stamp.
His thumb ran across the edge of the page, once.
He did not say anything for a long time.
When he spoke, his voice cracked in the middle.
"Ten weeks."
"About."
"Nine weeks ago I stopped coming to your room."
"I noticed."
"I was afraid I would hurt you." He pressed the paper flat against his knee. "Something was happening to me. I didn't understand it. I thought it best that you not see."
"You thought it best."
"I was wrong."
"Yes," I said. "You were."
He looked up at me.
His eyes were very bright.
"Tell me about the dinners," he said.
