Chapter 20: Spit It Back

She didn't get far, because she ran toward the one place she thought she knew.

Verity went straight to the Hall, and up to my room for her bag.

By the time I came through the kitchen door, Addie's women had her.

There were nine of them standing in a loose half circle, cooks and cleaners and a girl of sixteen from the laundry, and every one held something.

A rolling pin.

A cast-iron pan.

A ladle.

Verity was backed against the long pantry table with her bag clutched to her chest, and her braid had come undone.

"I've been so kind to all of you," she said. "I carried your laundry. I brought you soup."

"You brought her soup," the laundry girl said. "She was throwing up in the stairwell every morning, and you stood there and held her hair."

"I was helping."

"You were checking."

Nobody said anything after that.

I came the rest of the way in, slowly.

Every muscle in my body hurt, and the curse had gone quiet.

Bram was behind me, with a coat over his bare shoulders and his side bandaged, and the Greywater aunt and two of her cousins had followed us down the ridge in a truck.

They stood in the doorway, grim.

"Verity," I said.

She lifted her chin.

Her face had closed completely now, and there was nothing soft left in it.

"You've won, then," she said. "Congratulations. It was a clever bit of theatre with the cup. I hope you enjoy being a Luna."

"I don't want to enjoy anything. I want it off."

"Then ask my father."

"He's on the ridge with a broken leg, and nobody in his own pack will carry him." I stepped closer. "You fed it. You kept it banked for three months, every morning. Which means it goes back to you."
