Chapter 4: The Price of His Word

The men walked me out of the herbalist's shop and across the street to the diner lot.

They didn't grab me, and that was worse.

They stood close on either side, polite as ushers, and steered.

It was one in the morning, and the diner's sign buzzed red over a dozen parked trucks and a few late drinkers watching through the glass.

"I'm not getting into that truck," I said.

"Nobody asked you to get into it, ma'am," the man with the phone said. "We're only escorting you to Alpha Ashdane."

The second black truck was idling by the curb.

The back door opened, and a walking stick came out first.

Garland Ashdane stepped down onto the asphalt, unhurried.

He was lean and silver-haired, with a neat grey beard and pale eyes, the same pale eyes Verity had.

He smiled at me warmly.

"Linnea Fairweather," he said. "I'm so glad you're unhurt. My daughter was frantic."

"Your daughter sent four men after me."

"My daughter sent four men to protect you," he said gently. "A Luna carrying a heir should not be wandering the roads at night. Come. I have a house, and a warm bed, and Verity makes a very fine breakfast."

I took one step back.

The man on my left put his hand on my elbow.

My claws came out before I decided anything.

I had never half-shifted on purpose in my life.

I raked them across the back of his hand, and he swore and let go.

Garland lifted his stick an inch.

All four of them closed in.

Then two sets of headlights tore down Main Street, doing sixty.

The first truck hit the curb and stopped crooked.
