Chapter 17: The Last Night
I called Annalise from the passenger seat of Piers's car with my jeans buttoned wrong.
I did not have her number.
Piers read it off his phone without being asked.
It rang once.
"What," Annalise said.
Her voice was flat and hoarse, a voice from the bottom of a well.
"She asked for you first," I said.
"Before Cordelia, before me."
"She said to call Lissie."
The line was silent so long I thought she had dropped it.
"Where are you?" she said at last.
"On Central Avenue, twelve minutes away."
"I'm in the St. Anne's car park," Annalise said.
"I never left."
Pris was propped on her pillows when I got to her room, with her scarf off for the first time I could remember.
Her head was small and bare and perfectly shaped, and the lamp made it gold.
Her breath had changed.
It came in long pulls with a wait at the end of each.
Annalise was already there.
She stood at the left side of the bed in her cream coat, with her hand in my mother's.
