Chapter 12: The Edge

I was dressed in two minutes.

Luka had his jeans on and his shirt in his hand.

"Don't answer her," he said.

"If I don't, she'll stand in the street and ring every bell."

"Then I'll go down."

"No. She's not here for you."

The knock came before we reached the door.

It was soft and polite, three taps.

Luka opened it.

Willa stood on the landing in a long coat with her hair pulled back and her cheeks wet.

"Hi," she said. "I'm so sorry. I didn't think you'd be awake."

"It's one in the morning," Luka said.

"I know. I'm sorry. I just need Darby for one minute."

I stepped out into the stairwell.

Luka stayed in the doorway with his arms folded.

Willa looked at my hair, then at my mouth, then at the top button of my shirt, which I had done up wrong.

Her smile did not move.

"You two are together," she said.

"Why are you here, Willa?"

"Dane asked me to hum it for him tonight." She said it quickly, in a small voice. "We were in his room. He asked for the song and I couldn't remember how it goes. I tried. I made up something. He looked at me and he said, that's not it."

"Willa."

"He said that's not it, and he took his hand off mine." She was shaking. "He's never taken his hand off mine."

"I'm sorry."

"You aren't. But that's okay." She pressed her wrist against her eyes. "Please. Just the first three notes. I'll learn them. I'll hum them to him and he'll never ask again. I won't tell anyone where I learned it. You can keep Luka. You can keep everything."
