Chapter 12: Opening Night
Tierney came in with the bell jingling over her head.
She slid into the booth across from me, into the seat still warm from Darren, and took off her sunglasses.
"Morning, Miri," she said. "You're up early."
"So are you."
"I'm a morning person. You know that." She looked at the empty mug. "Where did Darren go? He hates it when people leave him with the bill."
"Kitchen. He said it was an emergency."
"He's always been dramatic."
She smiled, and I smiled, and I could feel my phone warm under my palm.
"Whatever he said to you," Tierney said lightly, "he's a liar, and he's a bad one. Nobody will believe a man who spent ten years bleeding a girl for money."
"That's an odd way to put it."
"Is it?"
"You said he bled me."
She tilted her head.
"I think you've misheard," she said. "You're tired. You've had a very hard week. Why don't you let me look after you?"
The bell over the door rang again.
Declan came through it fast, with Hazel at his shoulder, and every head in the diner turned.
He stopped at the booth and looked at me, and I saw his face.
He had woken in an empty bed.
"You left," he said.
"I was going to tell you."
"You were going to tell me after."
"Declan," Tierney said warmly, "sit down. Everyone's staring."
"Stand up," Hazel said. "Away from my sister-in-law."
Tierney rose, still smiling.
"I'm leaving," she said. "I only wanted to check on her."
